Screen Advertising Creative Specifications: What to Ask For

A production checklist for dimensions, orientation, duration, formats, safe areas and approval.

Screen advertising artwork should be designed for the display that will play it. “HD video” is not a complete specification, and a file that looks fine on a laptop may be unsuitable for a portrait venue display. Get the operator’s current requirements before producing the final creative. This reduces rejected files, last-minute resizing and messages that become unreadable once shown at their real viewing distance.

Start with the exact canvas

Ask for pixel width and height, orientation and any safe area. Aspect ratio describes shape; resolution describes the number of pixels. They are related but not interchangeable. A landscape file stretched into a portrait display can distort the brand or crop essential information. Build separate layouts where the formats require them.

Confirm playback requirements

For video, request the accepted container, codec, frame rate, maximum file size and exact duration. For static artwork, request accepted image formats and colour guidance. Do not assume the display supports audio or transparent backgrounds. The operator’s playback system and location policy determine what can actually run.

Design for comprehension

Use a strong visual hierarchy: a clear message, recognisable brand and simple next action. Preview the design at a smaller size to approximate distance. Keep essential elements away from edges and avoid fine text. Consider accessibility, contrast and the amount of time a person has to understand the message.

Control versions and approval

Name the creative with campaign, location or format, language and version. Save the exact file approved by the operator and record the approval date. When replacing artwork, confirm both receipt and the intended switch time. A clear version history is especially valuable when several people or languages are involved.

Frequently asked questions

Can I upload a social-media video unchanged?

Sometimes, but only if it fits the display and its requirements. Small captions, platform interfaces and audio-dependent storytelling often need adaptation for a public screen.

Who should approve the final file?

Your business should approve the message, and the operator should approve technical and location suitability. Keep both approvals so changes have a clear owner.

Put the plan into practice

Explore currently listed advertising screens, prepare an authorised screen listing, or organise your company workspace. Confirm the actual inventory, delivery and supported connections before committing to a campaign.
