DOOH Impressions, Reach and Frequency: Read the Numbers Correctly

Distinguish screen plays, estimated audience exposure, unique reach and response.

Audience numbers are helpful when their definitions are clear. A playback count, a footfall estimate and a modelled impression figure measure different things. Combining them as if they were identical can create an impressive report that says little about performance. Ask how a number was produced, what period it covers and which assumptions it uses before comparing one screen or market with another.

A play is a delivery event

A play records an advertisement being scheduled or displayed, depending on the system producing the log. Ask which it is. One play does not equal one viewer: several people may be nearby, and some may not look at the screen. The log is useful delivery evidence but should not be relabelled as a confirmed audience count.

An impression is an audience measure

In OOH planning, impression estimates can use audience measurement methods that account for a location and exposure opportunity. Ask for the method, provider, date and limitations. A venue’s total visitors may not all pass the screen. A raw traffic number should not silently become an advertisement-specific impression claim.

Reach and frequency answer separate questions

Reach concerns the number of different people estimated to encounter a campaign. Frequency concerns repeated encounters. Adding audience estimates across nearby screens can double-count people travelling through several locations. Request a deduplicated method if unique reach matters. Otherwise describe the total in a way that preserves its actual meaning.

Report response separately

Website visits, calls, qualified leads and sales describe later behaviour. They can support campaign evaluation but do not replace the delivery report. Keep clear labels and consistent date ranges. When reporting results, explain what is observed, what is estimated and what remains unknown rather than combining everything into one performance figure.

Frequently asked questions

Can every screen provide audited audience data?

No. Available measurement varies by operator and market. Request the evidence the seller actually has, and reflect any uncertainty in your comparison.

Where can I learn about professional audience measurement?

Industry measurement organisations such as Geopath publish information about their approach. Their methods should not be assumed to apply to an unrelated screen without confirmation.

Put the plan into practice

Explore currently listed advertising screens, prepare an authorised screen listing, or organise your company workspace. Confirm the actual inventory, delivery and supported connections before committing to a campaign.
